Vibe coding was named word of the year for good reason. The shift from writing every line of code to describing what you want in natural language — and having an AI actually build it — is genuinely transformative. 92% of US developers now use AI coding tools daily. But here’s what separates a frustrating vibe coding experience from a productive one: configuration.

The configuration stack for vibe coding

A vibe coding setup typically has three layers:

1. Universal project context (AGENTS.md)

The foundation. Everything your AI agents need to understand about your project, regardless of which tool they use.

Layer on top of AGENTS.md to handle platform-specific behavior.

For Claude Code (CLAUDE.md):

## For vibe coding tasks
When implementing a new feature:
1. Show me the plan first (files to create/modify, approach)
2. Wait for approval before writing code
3. Implement in small, reviewable chunks
4. Run tests after each chunk

For Cursor, add rules targeting specific file types and contexts. For Copilot, add workspace instructions that set behavioral expectations.

3. Task-level context

Even with great project configuration, complex vibe coding tasks benefit from explicit task context in your prompt. A few extra sentences upfront saves multiple correction rounds.

Less effective:

“Add a notifications system”

More effective:

“Add a notifications system. Use our existing Notification model in lib/db/notifications.ts. Follow the pattern in lib/email/send.ts for the delivery layer. Notifications should be dismissable and persist across sessions.”

Configuring for common vibe coding workflows

Feature development

The most common vibe coding pattern: describe a feature, let the agent build it.

What your config needs:

  • Explicit folder structure (where do new features live?)
  • Naming conventions (how do you name components, hooks, utilities?)
  • What “done” means (tests written? types correct? lint passing?)
  • Which patterns to follow (does the agent know your existing patterns to replicate?)

Add this to your config:

- Business logic: `src/lib/[feature-name]/`
- API layer: `app/api/[feature-name]/route.ts`
- Types: co-located with the code that uses them
Every new feature must include:
- TypeScript types for all function parameters and return values
- Error handling for all async operations
- Unit tests for business logic in `src/lib/`

Refactoring

Vibe coding for refactoring requires extra guardrails. The agent needs to know what it can touch.

When refactoring:
- Preserve existing behavior unless explicitly told otherwise
- Run tests after every change to catch regressions
- Don't rename public API methods or exported types without confirmation
- Change one thing at a time — small, testable steps

Debugging

Configure your agent to be a useful debugging partner:

1. Read the error message and stack trace carefully
2. Identify the specific file and line where the failure occurs
3. Propose a hypothesis before making any changes
4. Verify the fix with the relevant test or a new test
5. Check for similar patterns elsewhere in the codebase

The vibe coding review loop

Even with great configuration, vibe coding produces output that needs review. Build a lightweight review loop into your workflow:

  1. Describe the task with enough context for the agent to understand scope
  2. Review the plan before implementation starts (especially for anything touching more than 3 files)
  3. Check the output against your actual requirements
  4. Run the tests — always
  5. Refine the config if the agent made systematic mistakes
